“Giving Christ Our Best”

When we give to the Lord, do we give Him our best or do we give Him our leftovers. Perhaps you think, well the Lord doesn’t care what I give, just as long as I give.

Please read the following verses.

Mark 14:3-9

3 While he (Jesus) was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

As you can see, the Lord Jesus did not ask this woman to do what she did. He did notice what she did. Moreover, the Lord Jesus did not consider what she did to be a wasteful act.

What kind of gift would you give to someone you admire? If you had the opportunity to give a personal gift to a favorite sports star, a favorite actor, a famous political figure; what would you give them? Would you give them “left overs” or something that is very special to you?

Why would we give less then, to Jesus the Christ. May we give of our best to the master. The following lyrics give us a great example.

“Give of Your Best to the Master”

Give of your best to the Master;

Give of the strength of your youth;

Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor

Into the battle for truth.

Jesus has set the example,

Dauntless was He, young and brave;

Give Him your loyal devotion;

Give Him the best that you have.

Refrain:

Give of your best to the Master;

Give of the strength of your youth;

Clad in salvation’s full armor,

Join in the battle for truth.

Give of your best to the Master;

Give Him first place in your heart;

Give Him first place in your service;

Consecrate every part.

Give, and to you will be given;

God His beloved Son gave;

Gratefully seeking to serve Him,

Give Him the best that you have.

Refrain:

Give of your best to the Master;

Naught else is worthy His love;

He gave Himself for your ransom,

Gave up His glory above.

Laid down His life without murmur,

You from sin’s ruin to save;

Give Him your heart’s adoration;

Give Him the best that you have.

Refrain:
